How to Set Specific Goals and Avoid Failure

If you want to become the best version of yourself, it's probably a good idea to figure out what that might look like before you begin.  Why's that, you ask?  If I want to become a better athlete, that's all well and good.  Hell, it sounds like a pretty noble goal on the surface.  But without defining what it means to be a better athlete, how do I know if I achieve my goal?  How do I even know if I'm heading in the right direction?  Becoming a "better athlete" is too ambiguous, and is subject to an extremely high rate of failure or abandonment because you'll have no idea what the hell you're working towards or whether or not you're succeeding or failing.  Does being a "better athlete" mean that I can run faster/jump higher/lift heavier weights at the gym?  Does it mean all of those things?!  If so, I can think of no other way to fail at something than to try to do everything at the same time.

Hi.  I'm Dan.  Here are some true things about myself that you may be able to relate to:

  • While I'm financially stable, I do not have a lot of money to throw around
  • I am generally pretty healthy, but do not exercise or put much effort into my health
  • I used to do several extra-curricular activities and hobbies (track & field, choir, guitar, drawing, etc) that I no longer do
  • I have had and do have some great friendships - many of which have dwindled after "real life" set in for us all
  • I work full time for a company doing something completely unrelated to my college degree
  • I had extremely ambitious dreams & goals that I set for myself during high school and college and virtually none of them actually happened
  • I sometimes find myself doing things because I feel like I should be doing them, and I hate that
  • I feel like my sense of self and my actual self don't line up completely some of the time
  • I am not as happy as I could be

Any of this sound familiar?
